Lists
Make a list of what you're looking for. Are you looking for books?
Want some baby clothes? How about a lamp for your den? Write these
things down and bring your list with you as a reminder. Search our
site to find sales in your area selling the things you are looking for.
GET CASH!
It will be easier for everyone involved if you have some small bills on
you. Break up that $20 bill you just got out of the ATM by picking up
a bottle of water or a pack of gum along the way.
Inspect potential purchases
As a general rule, yard sale items are sold "as is" and all sales are
final. Ask questions about items you are interested in and don't be
afraid to ask if you can try it out, plug it in or crank it up.
Be courteous
If a sale is advertised to start at 9:00 a.m., DO NOT show up before
then. The people having the sale need time to get their sale set up
before dealing with customers. Also, when speaking to the seller,
never refer to anything they are selling in a derogatory manner,
everything for sale was once loved by a member of their household.
Safety
Watch where you're going! Yard sales can be dangerous places. Watch
for electrical cords and items for sale on the ground. If you have
children with you, take them by the hand or carry them. Keep children
away from sharp items and breakables. Also, watch for cars as you
cross the street. People driving by may be more concerned with
looking at the sale than watching where they are going.
Comfort
Wear comfortable shoes and dress according to the weather. Bring water
and snacks with you. Yard Sailing can be thirsty work, especially in
the summer months.
